A small town named Three Hills, situated in southern Alberta, Canada, was officially incorporated as a village in 1912. The name “Three Hills” was chosen from three renowned hills located to the north. Although it’s a relatively small agriculture & ranching community, it’s the home of Prairie College, where the 1998 Alberta Senior Games were hosted at the Maxwell Memorial Tabernacle.
The 75 year old, 120 foot water tower (now serving as an essential communications tower) was the topic of conversation in an Economic Development meeting back in 2011. The Three Hills Town Council and the District Chamber of Commerce came together and formed a plan to re-light the tower. As organizers spread the word, funding from dozens of large and small contributors started rolling in, and local volunteers organized fundraisers to help bring the vision to light.
When it came time to create a lighting plan for the project, Prolux Lighting & Controls was chosen. Prolux is known for their innovative designs, cost conscious solutions, and their commitment to creating lasting value for their customers; they chose to utilize Solid State Luminaires. Twenty SSF2106 6" Round RGBW Flood Lights with the optional Long Snoot to help control and narrow the beam pattern. The SSF2106 Flood Light provides superior color control and the widest range of mounting options in the industry. It has the ability to control 4.6 billion colors, including RGBW and tuneable white. The integral driver is 120 - 277 VAC universal voltage allowing installation adaptability.
To control lighting levels, color, and effects, the Nicolaudie DE3 Color Control Wheel was chosen. It is designed to provide a control solution for the most demanding of projects, whilst maintaining an easy-to-use panel of touch sensitive buttons. The controller integrates a graphical color screen allowing scene photos to be displayed. Easily view the elected zone, scene name and design without the need to navigate through complex menus. Users can change the speed, color and dimmer using the circular palette, and everything be programmed from either a PC, Mac, Android, iPad or iPhone.
Through the efforts of Byrne's Electric and a large volunteer team, all the old lighting was removed, and the new, energy-efficient LED flood lights were installed. Fondly referred to as the “cornerstone of the community”, the Three Hills Water Tower was now ready to visually showcase its special place within Kneehill County.
A special “Small Town, Bright Lights” lighting ceremony was held on October 4th, 2025. The kick-off celebration included dancing, food, face painting, free swimming at the community pool, and alpacas! The official water tower re-lighting took place at 8:00 PM (video link here) and was warmly received with cheers and dancing from the large gathering. The community is excited to view the dozens of upcoming color-programed lighting themes designed to salute special days and holidays throughout the year.

“This project was 2 years in the making. In 2023 Byrne Lammle from Byrnes Electric in Three Hills, Alberta set a challenge before me to light the iconic and historic water tower. In the past they had lit it with 2000 feet of Christmas lights but wanted a permanent and better solution. I ordered Colourline lazer samples with two narrow options to try on the legs. They performed perfectly and we then proceeded with a design, BOM, and a budget. The town came together once the decision was made to fund this project. It is quite remarkable to see the list of sponsorship from locals and businesses. It took Byrne and his assistant over 400 hours to properly install the new lighting on the tower. On the cool and rainy night, a packed audience witnessed the lighting for the first time. It was a really amazing moment, and the cheers and applause proved the residents really loved it.”
